The history of greeting cards
The tradition of sending greeting cards began the ancient Chinese, who exchanged greetings will to celebrate the New Year. The early Egyptians were also known to convey their good will messages via papyrus scrolls. In the early 1400s, handmade paper cards were being exchanged in Europe for greetings. The Germans had also had printed New Year's greetings from woodcuts in the 1400. Handmade paper Valentines cards were also given in parts of Europe in the early to mid-1400s.
The 1850s, saw the greeting card change from a relatively costly, handmade and hand-delivered gift to an affordable and popular means of sharing a greeting. Due to advancement in printing greeting cards became affordable to the general public for the first time. Trends such as Christmas cards followed, the first of which was published in London in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole hired artist to design a holiday card that he could send to his friends and acquaintances. In the 1860s, saw the beginning of the mass production of greeting cards. The industry employed well known artists, illustrators and card designers.
Technical advancements such as color lithography in 1930 caused a surge in the greeting card industry. Humorous greeting cards, or studio cards, became trendy in the late 1940s and 1950s.
In the 1970s humorous card designs became popular with the artist's name credited on the back. This was first of greeting cards that deviated from standard design. By the 1980s the funny, whimsical greeting card had become popular for most occasions.
